Memorial Day is the traditional start of the United States’ summer season. Many take advantage of the longer weekend to get away to that special spot and relax. There are parades and observances to remember those who have died in service of the US Armed Forces. No matter your view of the world or our history please take a moment to remember those who have fulfilled their oathes with their lives. These Memorial Day facts come from Mental Floss.

Here are some interesting facts about Memorial Day.

When was Memorial Day First Observed?

Informally in 1864 the citizens around Gettysburg PA first observed a Memorial Day. They decorated the graves of the recently fallen soldiers. The following year citizens in Vicksburg MS followed suit. Then in 1866 citizens in Illinois repeated this practice with former soldiers parading through Carbondale IL to the cemetery where Major General John A Logan gave a speech. The parade and speech in Carbondale IL gives Carbondale the credit in celebrating the first Memorial day as we know it. Citizens carried a similar but separate event in Mississippi at this time.

Was Memorial Day always known as Memorial Day?

No, initially it was dubbed Decoration Day. It was the day people went out to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers.

Also, at first Memorial Day was just a Federal holiday. Eventually, the states started to recognize the day as a holiday. This recognition by the states followed the divide that was created by the Civil War. The northern states quickly followed the Federal government in recognizing Memorial Day as a holiday, but not the states in Dixie. It was not until WWI that the southern states started to join the rest of the nation in honoring its war dead on Memorial Day.

Some of the southern states have a separate day to honor their Civil War dead.

Take a Moment this Memorial Day

So have a good time this Memorial Day and enjoy the extra day off from your work. However, please take a moment to reflect on the reason we have Memorial Day.

Get Ready for Fishing Season — Your Rods and Reels

Check your rods and reels out. Lubricate the reels and make sure the eyes on your rods are in good shape. Check out the line, most experts suggest trimming and discarding at least a few yards of line every now and then. Do it now and change the ending to the “one that got away” story!

Get Ready for Fishing Season — The Details

Too often many focus on the lures in their tackle box, while lures are fun I suspect most of the lures in our tackle boxes have caught more fishermen than fish. I bet those lowly items such as hooks, splitshots, and bobbers have contributed much more to fish fries than the lures! Open your tacklebox and inventory those lowly
but important items.

Maybe you are getting no action on your crankbaits and maybe the fish you are after have lockjaw, but the boat next to you appears to be pulling up many nice perch. If you don’t have the right tackle all you will be able to do is watch, if you have the gear with the right hooks and splitshot the fishfry you were fishing for will turn into a burger and brats affair. Be prepared and be flexible!

Get Ready for Fishing Season — Your Boat

Do not neglect your boat and its engine! Get your boat out of storage and check it out. Wash it up and put the muffs on it and start it up. You still have time to do this, get it done now so on May 2 2015 you and your buddies will be on top of your favorite fishing hole instead of pulling your boat out of the water looking for repair services.

Check out your lockers, you trailer lights your electronics, do you have enough personal flotation devices (PFDs), do you need to more flares? Do the lights work? Answer these questions now and avoid potential trouble on the water and possible FINEs. Paying repair costs now when your boat is on land is cheaper than paying the fines if you get caught without working lights or PFDs.

Get Ready and Go — What Else?

What other tips and ideas do you have when it comes to getting ready for fishing season?

2015 Camping Season — Weather is Cooperating

So far the weather is cooperating with the cold and snow of winter giving way to spring like weather. As of this writing there is still ice and snow about, but it is definitely going out of fashion.

Given this situation, we do not anticipate delaying the opening of the Chain O’ Lakes campground and we’ll even guess the lakes will be open for the opening of the general fishing season. Still, a late last gasp of winter could happen so pay attention to the weather and these pages for latest on the opening of the Chain O’ Lakes Campground.

2015 Camping Season — Are You Ready?

I know we are ready, but are you ready? I am sure you are ready but you need to make sure your camping equipment and gear is ready. It never turns out well when you need to replace gear hurriedly. Pull out your camping gear NOW and check it all out to make sure it still functions as you need it to. Inspect your tents, your canvas, your campers, turn on the campstoves, inventory your plates, cups, and utensils. Verify you still have bug spray, check out your fishing equipment (and don’t forget to make sure you have enough of the basics, don’t forget to check your hooks, your split shots, fishing line, etc). If you like to swim or skin dive inspect that equipment make sure all of it still works and fits.

Get your boats ready. Clean them up and test the engines, make sure the gas left over from last year still gets the job done. If you have engine problems you still have time to get your boat into a shop and get it fixed. If you wait until May 2 you could be stuck ashore while your buddies are on the honey-hole pulling in lunkers galore!

2015 Camping Season — Plan NOW!

In addition to preparing your equipment prepare your time too. Call your friends and family and plan with them your escape UpNort to the Chain O’ Lakes Campground eagle River Wisconsin. Get your vacation requests all filled out and approved NOW, beat your colleagues and they will be chained down at work and you will be free and on the water on July 3rd and or July 6th! Then make sure you get your favorite Chain O’ Lakes Campground camping site booked now!

If you get it done now then you do not have to worry anymore you can focus on other things knowing your spot UpNort is ready and waiting for you!
