Is there a better time of the year? It is summer and by this time the weather is consistently summer-like. While we are past peak sunlight there is still plenty of daylight and of course many of us are on vacation. We all know the basics of the Fourth of July, it is the day our Declaration of Independence was published by the 13 original colonies, informing His Royal Majesty’s government the Colonies were going to separate. Of course, that was just talk and it took years of struggle and action to make the independence a reality. The Fourth of July — A Raucous Holiday John Adams set the tone for our Fourth of July Celebration! Memorial Day is a more somber and serious holiday (it is) and the Fourth of July is the opposite. It is a fun and lively holiday. John Adams in a letter prior the publication of the Declaration of Independence states: I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. One such visitor many of us like to watch is the ruby throated hummingbird! The hummingbird with its ability to hover stationary in mid-air are fascinating birds. The vibrant colors of the males makes them an attractive sight to see. What do you know about the hummingbird? Hummingbird Facts — Migration Like many birds a hummingbird migrates south for the winter and returns for the summer months. They leave our region in the early fall and head for Central America. Hard to believe, but some of the hummers will overfly the Gulf of Mexico! Think about that, those teeny birds that seemingly feed four or five times per hour flying over that barren large body of water! I would guess they are mighty hungry by the time they finish! Many take advantage of the longer weekend to get away to that special spot and relax. There are parades and observances to remember those who have died in service of the US Armed Forces. No matter your view of the world or our history please take a moment to remember those who have fulfilled their oathes with their lives. These Memorial Day facts come from Mental Floss.
